Preface i
P r e f a c e
After the death of my father, George McClure,
I came into possessions of a series of five letters
addressed to him by Sam. B. Sweet, a second
cousin, in which he made inquiry concerning
ancestors and contemporary relatives common
to both himself and my father. He also included
much information that he had acquired from
other sources.
It was not until ten or twelve years ago that
I decided to follow up the leads provide by
Sweet's letters and see what additional infor-
mation I could obtain to complete a genealogy
of my ancestors. At that time the sources of
information for historical purposes had pretty
well dried up through the deaths of the older
members of the family I had known so I began
a search through the genealogical sections of
the Minneapolis Public Library and the Library
of the Minnesota Historical Society, These lead
to considerable correspondence and to refer-
ences to records that confirmed much of the
substance of Sweet's letters. I also received a

recommendation from a correspondent to see
a history by Geo. M. Pearson, 1316 Pacific
Street, Santa Monica, California, entitled
BENJAMIN AND ESTHER (FURNAS)
PEARSON; THEIR ANCESTORS AND
DESCENDANTS, a 538 page book hand-
somely printed and bound. I am embebted to
Mr. Pearson for the privilege of using infor-
mation from this history both for extending
and confirm what I have from other sources.
Whatever value my booklet may have con-
sists mainly in the enumeration of the descend-
ants of my great-grandfather, Robert McClure.
Possibly it may also serve as a point to start
from for building a history of future genera-
ations of branches of the families by some of
their members.
I will be glad to receive corrections of errors
and omissions and if enough to warrant are
received this year, I will mail a correction sheet
to each to whom this pamphlet is sent.

Dear Sir:
I expect you have forgotten that there is such
a person as me but to make a long story short,
I am the son of your cousin, Abby Sweet.
Some months ago I came across a book called
the Annals of Newberry, S.C., wirtten by John
A. Chapman of Newberry, South Carolina. In
This book it tells of the families who emigrated
from South Caroline to Miami Co., Ohio. It
Tells of the Pearsons, Jenkins, Jays, Coppakcs,
Jones, Nealls, etc., but says nothing about the
McClures or Buffingtons who were our imme-
diate relatives. I opned up a correspondence
with Mr. Chapman and learned that his infor-
mation regarding the old Quaker families was
[ 1 ]

derived from Judge John Belton O'Neall, long
since death— and that personally Mr. Chapman
did not have any information on the subject.
I made up my mind that I would like to know
something of these old people. When your
father moved to Iowa in 1853 or 1854, he gave
me an old book (it was the Quaker discipline),
in this book is written "Robt. McClure born
1753" also "This book is the property of the
Bush River Society of Friends under the care
of Isaac Cook"
again — "Robert McClure is permitted to keep
this book as his own. 1789."
This Robert McClure I think was your grand-
father. Can you give me any information as to
when the McClures and Buffingtons went to
South Carolina — at what place they lived and
the year they came to Ohio? I have always
understood that your mother, Abby Buffing-
ton, was a twin sister of my grandmother,
Nancy Buffington, and that their father was
Peter Buffington who was something of a
character during and after the Revolutionary
War. This is all that I now remember, Possi-

Page 3
bly you may be able to five me more informa-
tion on the subject. I remember my mother
saying that your mother and her mother, when
little girls, made an agreement that their first
daughters should be named after each other.
Hence, my mother was named Abby after your
mother and your sister Nancy Pearson was
named after my grandmother. Do you know
anything about my Grandfather Hammond's
people? I only know and think that was all my
mother knew that he formerly lived in Edge-
field District, S. C. and when my mother was
three years old (in 1813) returned to his old
home in Virginia and enlisted in a Virginia
Regiment in the War of 1812 and was never
heard of after. I don't know where you will
be interested in these old time people or not,
but I find the subject intensely interesting to
me and if you like, would like to correspond
with you on the subject as there are many more
questions I would like to ask.
In what year did you father, John McClure,
come to Indiana and did he formerly live in
Miami County, Ohio before coming to In-
diana? Also can you tell me who has your

father's old family Bible? I presume it has the
records of the births, etc., of all your family.
Also what was Aunt Polly's, your stepmother's,
name before she married your father? My recol-
lection is that she was a widow and that Mary
Savage was your step sister. I guess I have
asked questions enough for one time so will
quite for this time.

Dear Cousin:
I am in receipt of your letter of the 30th ult.
and thank you very much for the information
it conveys. Until you mentioned it, I had for-
got all about your brother Silas, I recalled

Elisha, Eli, Adeline, Abby, Angeline — and
knew of a Mark, whose tombstone is in the
old McClure graveyard in Lake Township. Un-
til now, I thought that you and Nancy Pearson
were the only children of Aunt Abby. I have
written Elisha at Weatherby, Mo., asking him
to give me your family record from the old
Bible if he has it. Wish you would give me my
uncle Benson Pearson's postoffice address, and
I will write him. Also can you give me Mary
Savage's address and your sister Abby's ad-
dress? Did you stepmother's folks come from
South Carolina? In the Book on Newberry the
Richardson, Manigan and Savage families are
mentioned. Also can you tell me to what fam-
ily of Pearson's — Sampson — belonged who
married your sister Nancy? What was his father-
er's name, etc. I believe I heard that both
Sampson and Nancy are dead. What has be-
come of all their children> Ellen married Amos
Taylor and lived somewhere in Mo. the last I
heard from the. The boys as I now recall
them were Silas, Young and Henry. I met
Young on the battlefield at Fort Donelson
Feb. 16, 1862. I was a soldier in the 44th Regi-

ment Ind. and he was in the 2nd Iowa. I never
heard whether he got out of the army safe or
not. I you can give me any information about
him, would like to have it. Henry was about
my age, Silas and Young were older. I think
there were some younger children but I have
forgotten their names. In my research about
the old South Carolina Quaker families, I have
secured the genealogy of one branch of the
Pearson family that I think you are interested
in and may not have had the information here-
tofore. It was furnished me by Dr. A. Pearson
of New Weston, Darke Co., Ohio, who is a
descendant of this line of Pearsons. The Pear-
son family came to Philadelphia with the Wm.
Penn Colony — four brothers moved form
Pennsylvania to South Carolina somewhere be-
tween 1753 and 1760. Their names were Sam-
uel, Benjamin, William and Thomas. It seems
that the first three died in South Carolina. It
was their children and grandchildren that emi-
grated to Ohio. One of the original brothers,
Thomas (who was born in Philadelphia in
1728), moved to Miami Co., Ohio and died
there in 1821 — age 93 years. The original Pear-

son however that we are interested in was the
above named Benjamin. He was born in 1726
and was married 1752 to Agatha Brooks. She
died in 1761 and Benjamin married for his sec-
ond wife, Margaret Evans. The children by the
first marriage were as follows:
Ist: Roseanna—born June 1, 1753—married
Samuel Russell. She came to Ohio in
1806 a widow with one son names Sam-
uel Russell and he was the ancestor of
the Russell family of Miami Co., Ohio.
____________
2nd: Margery—2nd daughter of Benjamin
and Agatha Pearson, was born October
18, 1754 — was married first to General
Buffington who was killed in the Revo-
lutionary War. The record does not show
whether there were any children by this
marriage or not but Dr. Pearson thinks
there was a son who came to Clinton Co.,
Ohio. If so, he was probably the Buffing-
ton that married your Aunt Polly.
____________
Margery's 2nd marriage was to Robt.
McClure who I take it was your grand-

father — making this Benjamin Pearson
(the father of Margery) your great-grand-
father.
Dr. Pearson says that Robt. McClure was
a saddler and Harness make by trade,
and about the time of his marriage, I
presume, made and presented to his step
mother-in-law (Margaret Evans Pearson)
a leather comb which is now the proper
ty of Dr. Pearson's brother, Lemuel Pear-
son now living at Fairmount, Ind. Dr.
Pearson says some of the McClures
moved to Wabash or Miami Co., Ind.
and that he visited them with his father
and mother in 1846 or 1847.
3rd children of Benjamin and Agatha Pearson was
Jacob, born October 9, 1756. He was
taken prisoner by the British and died
during the Revolution.
4th was Thomas, born July 22, 1758. Died in
early youth.
5th was Enoch, born August 4, 1760 and died
in Miami Co., Ohio in April 1850.
[ 8 ]

Page 9
Enoch's sons were Peter, Jacob, Moses
and Enoch. The Jacob mentioned was
undoubtedly my step grandfather and
Benson's father. This closes the record of
Benjamin and Agatha Pearson.
Benjamin by his 2nd marriage with Margaret
Evans had children as follows:
1st: Betty, who died in early childhood.
2nd: William, born May 29, 1765 — married
Hannah Powell, Sons were James Powell
and Robert.
3rd: Abel, born July 24, 1767; had two sons
— James (little Jim) and Charles, Both
raised large families.
4th: Samuel, born August 22, 1769, married
Abigail Powell, was reported to have
been drowned in the Wabash River in
Indiana.
5th: Robert, born August 15, 1771, died
March 2, 1850. He married Kesrah Hol-
lingswroth. His children were Sarah,
Benjamin, Susanna, Isaac, Rhoda, Rob-
ert Kesrah, John and Henry. The Dr.
Person heretofore mentioned is a son
of Isaac
[ 9 ]
|
|
Page 10
6th: Joseph, born January 30, 1774, married
Margaret Cammack. His sons were Abel,
William and Cammack. The William
mentioned was called Preacher Billy. I
remember of his visiting my father and
mother in Lake Township many times.
7th: John, born August 19, 1776, married
Ruth Hollingsworth. His sons were
Isaac, Benjamin and John.
The records show that your great-grand-
father, Benjamin Pearson, died in 1788, the
exact date not given.
What do you know about the General Buf-
fington who it seems was your grandmother's
first husband? I don't recall as I ever heard of
him before. I have written to South Carolina
to see if I can get any information and if he
was connected with our Ancestor, Old Peter.
Well this I think will tire you out so will
quit by wishing you good night.
Yours Truly

Dear Cousin:
Your letter of 7th inst. at hand. Am obliged
for the information it contains. It helps me to
clear up several points about which I was in
doubt. As for Sampson Pearson's ancestry —
think it is now clear. As I wrote you in former
letter — there were four brothers of the original
Pearson who went to Philadelphia to South
Carolina, viz. Samuel, Benjamin, William and
Thomas. I gave you the record of the Benjamin
family who was your great-grandfather. Sam-
uel was the older of the four and is supposed
to have been born in Philadelphia in 1724 and
died in South Carolina in 1790. He was mar-
ried four times — once in Pennsylvania, twice
in Frederick County, Virginia, and the last

time in South Carolina. The marriages and
dates are as follows:
1st in 1749 to Martha Worthington
2nd in 1767 to Christina Potts
3rd in 1762 to Mary Rogers
4th in 1772 to Mary Steddom (a widow)
The children of these marriages were as fol-
lows.
1st: Mary, born Feb. 26, 1750, died 1836, mar-
ried 1st: Wm. Taylor; 2nd: John Mills
2nd: Enoch, born Jan. 14, 1752; married Phoe-
ba Demans
3rd: William, born Apr. 1, 1754, died 1811,
married Anna Steddom
4th: Martha, born Jan. 15, 1759, died 1842,
married Henry Steddom
5th: Benjamin, born Feb. 26, 1763, died 1844,
married Esther Furnas
6th: Hannah, born mar. 23, 1765, died 1849,
married Saml. Kelley
7th: Samuel, born Nov. 3, 1767, died 1847,
married Mary Coates
8th: Eunice, born Mar. 5, 1776, died ——, Mar-
married Alx. Mills.
[ 12 ]
|
|
Page 13
9th: Sarah, born Aug. 23, 1773, died —, married
Joseph Furnas
I take it that this Samuel's 7th child of the
original Samuel was Sampson's father ins-
much as you say Sampson's mother was a
Coats.
The above information was furnished me by
Mr. Eli Jan — Whose wife is a granddaughter of
Benjamin shown above. Mr. Jay now lives in
Richmond, Indiana and is a son of old Denny
Jan — of whom I have heard our people talk
when I was a child. This Mr. Jay is a crank on
genealogy, and wants me to furnish him with
the record of my step grandfather's and Samp-
son's family. I have written my Uncle Benson
and Ellen Taylor for any information they many
have. Since I have been looking up these old
matter have got into quite a correspondence
— with a great many people and as fast as I
get any information regarding our ancestors,
will advise you. I don't know how well you
have kept posted as to my father and mother's
family so will tell you about them up to date.

Georgia. Joshua now lives near Albion, Noble

in 1885. Rhoda Sunderland lives 7 miles north
of Fort Wayne on the Goshen Road — as for
myself, I enlisted in the Army in 1861 when
but little past 16 and served four years. Was
wounded at Shiloh, Stone River and Chicka-
amuga, returned home from the Army in Sep-
tember 1865, just one month after my mother's
death. I entered the Railway service in 1866
with the Wabash Ry. at Fort Wayne, was made
agent at Fort Wayne in 1874 — in 1884, I was
promoted to Division Freight Agent with of-
fice at Peru, Ind. In 1887, I took service with
the L.E. & W.RR. as Assistant General Freight
Agent and in 1896 was made General Freight
Agent, and now have almost one thousand
miles of Road over which I have supervision.
I was married in 1867 to Amanda Pratt, daugh-
ter of Allen Pratt, an old settler living north
of Fort Wayne on the Goshen Road. I have

not received a reply. I will enclose you here-
with the record of the McClure family so far
as I have been able to make it up from informa-

brothers and sister is very imperfect. So I will
ask you to give me any further information
you may have that will make it more com-

from memory — don't think I have got them
in the order of their births as I had no dates
to go by. You can probably put me right on
the order of birth if you can't five all the dates.
I know that your grandfather, Robt. McClure
was born 1753 from an old book your father
gave me when he moved to Iowa. On the fly-
left is written "Robt. McClure's book. He was born in 1753".
I have left the name of his first wife blank
as you didn't give it — also of his daughter by
first wife who married Azariah Julien. Wish
you could think them up. If you find any errors

write. Abby's health is very bad also, being
crippled with the rheumatism. As you haven't
the full information regarding your father's
family. I send you herewith a copy of rec-
ord as made up from information furnished
by Abby. I notice that your mother had two
more children than you mention or that I ever
heard of, viz. Robert and John who both died
young. Also your stepmother had two, John
and Ishmael of whom I had no record who
died in infancy. The only thing I now lack is
to get the name of Silas' wife and the dates of the
the marriage of Eli, Silas, Elisha, Abby, Ade-
line and Angeline which would make my rec-
ord complete. Can you give me the names and
post office address of any of Eli or Silas' child-
ren? if so, I will write them for the additional
information wanted.
ˆ Abby says that the name of your aunt who
married Azariah Julien was Sally. You will re-
member that you didn't recall it. Did I under0

ANCESTORS OF MARGERY PEARSON
In the History of BENJAMIN AND ES-
THERE (FURNAS) PEARSON; THEIR AN-
CESTORS AND DESCENDANTS by Geo.
M. Pearson, there is recorded four generations
of ancestors of Margery (Pearson) McClure,
second wife of Robert McClure, as follows:
LAWRENCE (died 1673: and ELIZABETH
(died 1662) PEIRSON lived and died in Pow-
nall Fee, a village in Cheshire, England near
Chester where they were buried. They had five
children. Lawrence was a mason by trade. He
was one of the early members of the Religious
Society of Friends in England, and suffered
with others persecution and imprisonment in
consequence. His three sons, John, Thomas
and Edward came to Philadelphia and owned
land in Chester county, Pennsylvania, near
Philadelphia. They all spelled their names
PEARSON.
THOMAS PEARSON, the second son of Law-
rence and Elizabeth Peirson, married MAR-
GERY SMITH 2/18-1683 at Pownall Fee,
Cheshire. They came to American the same year
[ 20 ]

ANCESTORS OF MARGERY PEARSON
arriving at Philadelphia 7/29-1683. He bought
several tracts of land in the years following to
a total of 900 acres. Included in the total was
a tract of 250 acres which his brother John
bought from William Penn in 1681. Thomas
died in 1734. There were ten children born to
Thomas and Margery, six sons and four daugh-
ters. The second daughter, Sarah Pearson, born
1697 was married to John West. They were
parents of Benjamin West, the celebrated artist
and painter, who was born at Springfield, Pa.
10/10-1738 and died at London, England 3/11-
1820.
ENOCH PEARSON, son of Thomas and Mar
gery (Smith) Pearson, was born 3/12/1690,
died in Frederick County, Virginia in 1749,
married 1719 to MARY SMITH, dau. of Wil-
liam and Mary Smith. This marriage was not
according to the order of Friends and Enoch's
apology, which follows, shows that he was not
disowned from meeting. Whether Mary be-
longed to the Society of Friends is not known.
Their children did not have birthright member-
ships in the Society. they were all born in
Pennsylvania.

confess unto you, and also that I am sorry

may be more honorable. I also desire your
Prayers that my faith fail not.
(Signed) Enoch Pearson"
It is probably that Mary (Smith) Pearson moved
with her son, Samuel, to the Bush River Settle-
ment in South Carolina in 1771. Of the eleven
children born to Enoch and Mary Smith Pear-
son, four are named by Sam. B. Sweet in this
Order:
Samuel b 1724, Benjamin b 1726, William,
Thomas b, 1728. Geo. M. Pearson gives the
order and dates as follows:
William (b 1722 d 1780), Samuel (b 1724 d
1790), Thomas (b 1728 d 1820), Benjamin (b

1730 d 1788). These seem so well authenti-
cated there is every reason for accepting them.
Benjamin, the fourth in the list was the father
of Margery Pearson Buffington McClure.
BENJAMIN PEARSON, fifth son of Enoch
and Mary (Smith) Pearson, was born in Penn-
sylvania in 1730 and died in Bush River Settle-
ment in 1788. He married (first) AGATHA
BROOKS about 1752; (second) MARGA-
RET EVANS about 1762. He moved from
Pennsylvania to Bush River Settlement in
South Carolina in 1768 or 1769. He did not
belong to the Society of Friends although sev-
eral of his children joined the church in South
Carolina. The children of Benjamin and Aga-
tha (Brooks) Pearson were:
ROSANNA PEARSON (b 1753 d 1831) mar-
ried SAMUEL RUSSELL. She came to Ohio in
1806 a widow with one son, Samuel Russell,
who was the ancestor of the Russell family of
Miami County, Ohio.
MARGERY PEARSON (b 1754 d 1840) mar-
ried (first) GENERAL BUFFINGTON, a Rev-
olutionary officer who was killed during the
war. It is said there was a son by him who came

husband was ROBERT McCLURE.
JACOB PEARSON, born 1756, died while a

young.
ENOCH PEARSON, born in 1760; married

DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT McCLURE
ROBERT McCLURE was born in Virginia in
1753. His father emigrated from Scotland early
in the eighteenth century and settled in Vir-
ginia. Robert moved in 1770 to Bush River
Settlement in Newberry County, South Caro-
lina. He followed the trade of saddler and har-

SAMUEL McCLURE, JR.
Of the small number of hardy pioneers who
first settled in Grant County very few are now
living, and of these Samuel McClure is perhaps
the oldest resident. Of Scotch-English and
Irish Descent, he was born November 16, 1807,
and is therefore over eighty years of age. His
great grandfather emigrated from Scotland ear-
ly in the eighteenth century to Virginia. There

his grandfather was born, and who in 1770
emigrated to South Carolina, in which state
his father, SAMUEL McCLURE, SR. was born in
South Carolina in January 1777. Her father was
of Irish descent and her mother of English. In
1804 Samuel McClure, Sr., and Mary Stewart
were married, and shortly after moved to Day-
ton, Ohio. Remaining there a few years they
moved to Shelby County, Ohio, where Samuel,
Jr., the subject of this sketch, was born. In
1827 the family moved to Indiana, settling on
the site where Wabash is now located. In a
sort time they moved to this county, and en-
tered land. In 1827 Samuel McClure, Sr., built
the first mill known on the Mississinewa River,
after which he returned to Wabash, where he
died in September, 1838. His wife, Mary, died
in the following May. The family consisted of
ten children, nine of whom were living at the
time of the parents' death. Only three are now
living, Samuel McClure, Jr., William McClure
and Ruth Waldron. . . January 10, 1833, SAM-
UEL McCLURE was married to SUSANNAH
FURROW, daughter of Jas. G. Furrow, of

Mill Creek Monthly Meeting in Miami
County, Ohio, to wit;
Robert McClure died 9/11-1830. Buried

The Exodus of Quaker families from South
Carolina to Ohio at the beginning of the nine-
teenth Century occasioned considerable atten-
tion. George M. Pearson quotes Eli Jay's con-
clusion regarding the cause which is here
reproduced in part:
"Judge O'Neall's account is that 'Between
1800 and 1804 a celebrated Quaker preacher,
Zachary Dicks, passed through South Caro-
lina. He was through to have also the gift of
prophecy. The massacres of San Domingo
were then fresh. He warned Friends to come
out of slavery. He told them if they did not,
their fate would be that of the islanders. This
produced in a short time a panic, and removals
to Ohio commended, and by 1807, the Quaker
settlement had, in a great degree, changed its
population.' . . . I know it is common to at-
tribute this migration to the preaching of
Zachary Dicks. But if we would have an intelli-

gent understanding of this exodus, we need
carefully consider the real, and no the appar-
ent, cause of it. Friends at first, in common
with others, held slaves to some extent. But
there was all the time a protest against the
practice as inconsistent with their Christian
profession. In the fifty years before 1800, they
had taken a very advanced position on the
subject. This change had been gradual. One
by one it was laid upon their heart and con-
science that it was wrong to hold their fello-
men in bondage, and they freed their slaves.
This conviction spread, and soon became the
concern of the whole Society, By loving,
though persistent, persuasion, pressing the
truth, as it was apprehended, upon the con-
science and judgment of the membership, the
Society of Friends became united in forbidding
the practice of holding slaves by the members.
A query required to be answered at that time
was: 'Are Friends clear of purchasing, dispos-
ing of, or holding mankind as slaves?' It was
remarkable how readily and generally this
course was approved and observed. The few

that declined were testified against as mem-
bers. And thus the Friends cleared themselves
of slave-holding; and this position became
their accepted doctrine and practice, believing
slavery to be un-Christian and a menace to
good society and civil institutions.
